Dreams
A dream is a succession of images, ideas, emotions, and sensations that usually occurs involuntarily in the mind during certain stages of sleep.
We usually have up to 7 dreams a night, but those are easilly forgotten, unless they are witnessed during the REM (Rapi Eye Movement) stage of sleep.
There are a lot of different type of dreams, like the scary ones (Nightmares), normal ones (those where you do normal things like go to the store or have a normal day at school), the adventerous ones, but bizzare dreams are the most common. Those where nothing makes sense.
Dreams are a normal part of our lives, so of course there is a science of dreams. It's called : Oneirology. One of the better known 'scientist' of dreams is of course Frued. But more about him later. His theory suggests that dreams show our hidden desires and emotions, that we usually want to ignore. He published a book about dreams called The Interpetration Of Dreams.
In history and cultures, dreams have been very imporant. Many important cultures had diffrent explanations for them.
The Sumerians, Greeks, Egyptians, Romans and so on, beilived that dreams were messages from the gods or dead loved ones. While nightmares were the doing of demons. The Abrahamic think the same with God giving them dreams and evil spirits the nightmares. In Hinduism it is beilived that the soul has many states and that dreaming is one of them ( Waking, Sleeping and Dreaming). The Chinese thought it was the soul wandering, showing hidden desires until the soul was guided until the person was awakend. The Native Americans had a story about Asibikaashi or Spider Woman. She made webs for her children so they would catch the dreams, only letting the good ones through. But since there were more and more children she told them how to make those webs and so we get the origin of dream catchers.
Dreams are a normal part of our culture nowadays. We have them used as a plot device in books or movies (Alice in Wonderland, Wizard of Oz, The Neverending story, The Book of Duchess, Dreamlands, Inception and so on). And they are showned in many paintings like Picasso's The Dream, Jacob's Dream, The Sleep of Reason Produces Monsters and many more.
Dreams have many theories and views on them. The most popular ones are:
-The Freudian Theory (desires, wishes of the unconscious, childhood and memories)
-Jungian Theory (Messages to the dreamer, solve emotinal problems, fears,...)
-Perls Theory (parts of the person that are ignored or suppressed, objects and meanings of them)
The most common of dreams have simple explanations to them. Example:
- Falling(losing control and fear)
-Showing up naked or in your underwear at work or school (anxiety, vulneribility)
-Test taking (being a perfectionist or trying to stay alert)
-Dying (trying new things or the need to move on)
-Being chased (trying to face a problem or trying to figure out if there is one),…
You have probably heard of nightmares and night terrors. Correct? Well those are completely diffrent things.
Nightmares are unpleasent dreams that cause negative emotions like fear or sadness and if the person wakes up they usually can't go back to sleep for a short time.
Night terror is a sleeping disorder that usually affects children and causes horrible feelings of dread and horror.
The brain is big part in this, as seen on this picture:
In the end we also have Lucid dreams, those are dreams where you can control what happens but they are rare unless you master it. Dreams usually reflect the thoughts of the dreamer, giving you a peak into your subconscious. Of course they don't tell you everything, but they can show you many things you didn't even know. Dreams are a wonderful thing that many of us love and are happy that they exist.
